FAQ
What is the difference between the SkyRadar-L single band and the SkyRadar-D dual band receivers?
The key advantage of a SkyRadar-D dual frequency system vis-à-vis its single band brethren is the considerably increased traffic awareness and correspondingly greater safety that it provides. This is primarily due to SkyRadar-D's ability to receive and display positions of ADS-B OUT-equipped airplanes on both frequencies 978 MHz (UAT) and 1090 MHz (1090-ES). With SkyRadar-D pilots always see nearby ADS-B OUT-equipped airplanes, regardless whether they have line-of-sight to the ADS-B ground station. This ability to see directly-airplane-to-airplane-is very advantageous when one is flying low in the airport pattern or in a mountainous area or simply too far from the ground station, just to name a few. In congested area such as a large airport, there is high probability that there is going to be an aircraft equipped with ABS-B OUT which will keep "waking up" airport's ground station to broadcast traffic. This information is all radar-detected traffic within a cylinder with 15nm radius and ± 3000 feet in height, with requesting aircraft in its center. A pilot that has SkyRadar-D and who is flying within this cylinder will receive the same picture as ADS-B OUT-equipped airplane with one distinction: that it will not be in its center. Even so it considerably raises pilot's traffic awareness. SkyRadar-D also provides GA pilot greater flexibility and economic advantage in enabling a wider choice of options when it comes to selection of ADS-B OUT solutions.
How often does the NEXRAD data update in the air?
Local NEXRAD image gets updated every 5 minutes CONUS NEXRAD gets updates every 15-20 minutes
Will I see traffic using SkyRadar?
Generally speaking, no. The main reason is that the FAA turns on its traffic broadcast only after an aircraft “pings” the FAA ADS-B ground station. However, if you fly in the vicinity of an airplane that is equipped with the ADS-B-OUT transmitter, you will see both this airplane and the surrounding traffic within a 15-miles radius of it.
What do I need in order to see traffic?
You need to have a certified ADS-B-OUT transmitter (see above).
Where can I find the most current ADS-B coverage map?
You can find the most current ADS-B coverage map on the FAA’s website by clicking here: FAA/ITT (select ADS-B and then "En Route")
Will Radenna support the Android platform?
We are working on the support of Android platforms; however, the release of such support depends on the availability of display technology qualitatively comparable to the iPad®.
Does SkyRadar work with other application providers?
This question can be better addressed by people who develop an application in question. SkyRadar outputs data in industry standard GDL-90 format. Hence, any software package that is capable to input data in GDL-90 format should be able to receive and display SkyRadar data stream. At this time two companies that officially work with SkyRadar: WingX from Hilton Software and MountainScope from PCAvionics.
Are you planning to release a new product in the near future, thus making my purchase obsolete? Do you have a “protection” plan?
Typically, we release substantially new products once a year to minimize upgrade hassle to our customers. In most of cases we offer an upgrade path. However, depending on the character of the release additional payment might be required.
Will, and if yes when, you have a transceiver?
We cannot communicate a date when specific products or features will be available.
Does SkyRadar work at high—40,000 feet—altitude?
Yes, but the attention should be paid on to where and how one places ADS-B antenna. (see more below)
What external antenna can I use?
Belly mounted DME antenna, works very well provided cable from the antenna to the SkyRadar is not too long. Less than 6-8 feet depending on the cable used.
Can I substitute your GPS antenna by my own?
No, you cannot. SkyRadar is an integrated multi-component system and it allows use of an extension to its GPS antenna up to 20ft long.
Does SkyRadar rely on iPad’s GPS or does it have its own?
No, SkyRadar has its own integrated GPS.
